Surprise Visit from Villa Hero
They were summoned to the head teacher’s office, with no idea what they could have done. Smartly dressed in their school uniforms Callum Thompson and Josh Kent looked a little apprehensive as Mr Turnbull asked them if they knew what they why they were there. Then a familiar voice was heard at the side of the room. The Perry Beeches The Academy Year 7 pupils turned with surprise and delight to see their football hero Stiliyan Petrov sitting at a table ready to meet them. The Aston Villa fans aged 11 and 12, who play for Great Barr Harriers, had been fundraising for the former Villa player’s charity – The Stiliyan Petrov Foundation, which raises funds for research in to leukaemia and cancer. The youngsters clocked up 32 lengths of the pool at Perry Beeches Swimming baths in a swimathon, and asked family and friends to sponsor them raising £130. They then wrote to Stiliyan and asked if they could meet him to present him with a cheque. And the boys had no idea that the Villa icon was taking them up on their request – until they saw him sitting in the office of their head teacher, Stuart Turnbull.
