Our aim was to educate and celebrate! We have worked closely with Elly Barnes over the past two years, ensuring that we make provision for all learners within our school, regardless of LGBT status. Each and every department included an LGBT theme into their curriculum area, and PSHE lessons tackled LGBT bullying. Lucy Wardle delivered an assembly to all year groups, introducing the educate and celebration theme.
Our Drama and Music GCSE students wrote and performed a beautiful production, which addressed many LGBT issues such as: school life as an LGBT student, friendship issues, transgender and body image, teen suicide, stereotypes and acceptance of all, regardless of sexuality.
We also held an LGBT panel which gave 50 of our students the opportunity to talk to and question 10 positive LGBT role-models. We are also working with Stonewall, developing an anti-homophobic bullying campaign which will run until April. Student and staff feedback has been phenomenal, and we feel that the week truly educated, but most importantly celebrated, LGBT contributions to society and school.
